School Lunch Program
Feeding the Next Generation of Leaders for Christ
At Pignon Christian Academy, our hearts are for our students... mind, soul, and body! In the impoverished community surrounding Pignon Christian Academy, most families average about one meal a day. Often, families will cook this meal late in the evening to soothe hunger pangs before bedtime which means most students come to school on an empty stomach and with no packed lunch.
The Lunch Program provides a much-needed, nutritionally balanced second meal that most students would not have otherwise and it ensures that our students eat during the day. This has a direct impact on our students' ability to focus and learn in the classroom, thus increasing our effectiveness in educating the next generation of leaders for Christ!
Students and staff enjoy lunch made possible by donated food from Meals from the Heartland, a non-profit based in Iowa that is connected to a third party distributor in Pignon. Each prepackaged box contains rice, dried meat, and dried vegetables. Local ingredients are added to transform these ingredients into a delicious and healthy meal. Donor funds are used to cover the associated costs of preparing and serving meals, including purchasing cooking oil and spices, propane for the cooking stove, and paying the salary of the cooks.
About Lunch
Family Empowerment
Pignon Christian Academy employs and empowers several mothers/guardians of our students by hiring them as our cooks. This provides them with much needed income so that they can better care for their families. New cooks are trained each trimester so that we can help multiple families in this way.
